TYPES OF FINISH on BEADS
CEYLON
refers to transparent beads that have been lustered. These beads have a pearl like finish despite their color.
COLOR-LINED beads have a separate, opaque color inside the
center of a transparent bead. Because the color is within the hole, these beads are more durable than surface painted beads.
GREASY glass transmits light but you cannot
see through it. Greasy beads have depth and richness. Greasy glass is actually a dense opal glass.
GOLD-LINED beads are transparent colorless beads where the interior
center of the bead is lined with genuine gold. These give transparent beads a very distinct golden tone.
LUSTER is a uniform, shiny finish on the surface of a transparent,
translucent or opaque bead. Luster beads appear to resemble pearls.
MATTE
beads have a frosted surface. The original glass bead has a shinny finish. The glass bead is then dipped into an acid bath,
which creates the MATTE frosted color. You can convert any bead into a MATTE bead by purchasing a bottle of Bead Dip.
METALLIC beads are normal glass beads with a shiny metal-like
surface coating. The finish may be applied as a baked-on paint or electroplated.
OPAQUE glass transmits no light. When you hold the bead up to the light, you cannot see light passing
through the bead.
OPAL or MILK glass transmits
light but is murky, milky or translucent. Generally, Opal glass has a milky appreance.
PAINTED or DYED colors are painted/dyed with surface colorants, which are applied
after the bead is made, generally with heat and solvents.
SEMI-PRECIOUS
beads are stones are gems that are not as rare or expensive as precious stones. Examples of precious stones are diamonds,
emeralds, sapphires and rubies. Examples of semiprecious stones are Turquoise, Jade, Onyx, Tiger-eye, opals, topaz, amethyst
and the list continues.
SILVER-LINED beads
have a mirror-like reflective lining. Silver-lined beads are transparent colorless beads where the interior center of the
bead is lined with silver. These give Transparent beads a very distinct silver tone.
TRANSPARENT beads allow light into or through the beads. Transparent beads are beads
that light can shine through.
WHITEHEARTS have
an inner core of white glass. When you view the bead off the strand, the inside of the bead is made with White glass. Once
the bead is strung, the white interior will not show.
